Educational Films

This collection features vintage educational films from a variety of sources. Films intended for educational purposes are an enormous, often neglected part of the twentieth century media landscape. Archived here are corporate and government sponsored films; classroom academic films instructing students in science and the humanities, and classroom guidance films on sex education, manners, and morality; military training films; medical films aimed at the public or at health practitioners; religious conversion films; and a host of others, too many to fully enumerate.

The majority of these films were produced for K-12 and college-aged students from the 1940s to the 1970s. They include films from significant collections and repositories on psychology (e.g. the Psychological Cinema Registry), science (Encyclopedia Cinematographica) and art They will be of interest to educations and researchers, but equally to filmmakers and artists or groups documenting local history.

Educational films were shown to audiences of all ages, though they were typically produced with a specific age group and instructional purpose in mind. Many were accompanied by study or discussion guides used to facilitate post-screening discussions. They were viewed in an array of contexts, most often in schools and universities, churches, libraries, museums, social clubs, and the military. Taken collectively, these materials played a key role in shaping the citizenry of a generation.

Our purpose in collecting these films on the Internet Archive is to allow increased access to an important part of twentieth century film history.

The donation item records what pallets are part of this.

This film examines the process of holography, types of holograms, and the uses of the hologram for artistic and scientific purposes, as demonstrated by Tung H. Jeong, PhD, Lake Forest College. About the film, director Tom Smith writes: "Nobel Prize winner Dennis Gabor, holography’s inventor, saw the film after it was made and said it was the best film on the subject that he had seen. It is such a visual subject it made for a good film. I knew the 3-D quality could only be appreciated if...

This film was made to instruct police officers on the basics of childbirth and to show them an actual birth - mostly so they wouldn't panic or pass out when confronted with such a scenario. WARNING! The poor acting by actual police officers and doctors and low production values in this film make the live birth scene even more shocking than others from this genre. On the surface, this film may seem like an average science film about time and space, but like most of films from the Moody Institute of Science, there is an ulterior motive. The films host Irwin Moon had an interest in science as a child and later incorporated that interest into his life as a pastor. He would tour the country giving his Sermons of Science where the marvels of science provide the visible evidence of a Divine plan of creation. His work with GIs during World War II showed him the...

Material is selected to show the various ways that tongue and lips are used in order to contrast the principal syllable types of Peking Chinese. X-ray techniques show the articulatory process and acoustic output of native speakers; prepared scripts, consisting mainly of short, meaningful utterances, illustrate selected phonetic features. Speakers were chosen both for linguistic suitability and lack of physical characteristics that might interfere with X-ray quality. From the X-Ray Film series
